On 1 April, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker visited his old high school, Cashmere High School, to support the students’ Shave for a Cure event.
The mayor, who shaved his head as part of the school's event, said to the Weekend Press that: “He wanted to help raise awareness of the difficulties which cancer sufferers faced.”
In addition to Mayor Bob Parker, School Principal Mark Wilson, head boy Ryan Dsouza and an estimated 20 other students shaved.
This is the third year in a row that Cashmere High School has supported Shave for a Cure with students donating a gold coin to wear mufti and shavees gaining sponsorship from family and friends.
Over the years, the school has raised over $10,000 for the LBF. This year they hope to fundraise between $3,500 and $4,000. To support the school go to: shaveforacure.co.nz/ and search for Cashmere.
The event was held during the school’s Talent Quest and was organised by Cashmere High School head boy Ryan D’Souza, student Ryan McKenzie and Blair Johnson, teacher and Senior Manager, Student Council.
Cashmere High School Head Boy, Ryan Dsouza said: “I have decided to shave my head because I want to raise awareness within my and the wider community for a great cause. The money raised over the event today will go towards the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation. Thinking about it now, it is a very small price to pay for the benefit of someone in need of some support. You don’t really realise the importance of health until you're ill, so I hope that today will help everybody to understand the need to take care of themselves.”
The event was supported by a local Rodney Wayne salon.
