Here's why you should support my shave 🧡

My Shave for a Cure 💛

This will be my first time shaving my head. As a woman, my hair has always been closely tied to my sense of self, so deciding to let it go hasn’t been easy.

I’m doing this because cancer touches more lives than we often realise. I know people who have been through treatment, people who are still going through it, and people who support their loved ones quietly in the background. For many of them, hair loss isn’t a choice—it’s just one more difficult part of an already overwhelming journey.

Taking part in Shave for a Cure is my way of standing alongside those affected, and of turning something that scares me into something meaningful.

If you’re able to donate, you’ll be helping fund research and provide practical care and emotional support for people living with blood cancer in New Zealand. Every day, 8 people here are diagnosed with a blood cancer.

Your donation can help:

$28 provide information for families

$55 help patients get to treatment

$112 support access to support groups

$200 fund blood cancer research

$500 help keep young patients connected to their classmates through Monkey in My Chair

Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a real difference.

Thank you for being here, for reading, and for supporting this cause—and me—as I take this step 💛

My Shave For A Cure 💛 *Extended*

Sunday 22nd Feb
This is an extended version of my reasoning of why I want to do this and my hope that more will support this, and other amazing causes like it to help support those fighting to cure cancer.

This will be my first time shaving my head. As a woman, my hair has always been a big part of how I see myself, so this isn’t an easy decision for me.
Some people have told me I’m too young to do this, or that it might make certain parts of life harder. But the truth is, many people facing cancer don’t have the option to choose. Hair loss is often just one of many things taken from them during treatment.
I know people personally who have been through cancer, and others who are still going through it. As I’ve shared my plans, I’ve also discovered how many friends, family members, and acquaintances have been touched by cancer in some way. It’s more common (and closer to home) than we often realise. I was even reminded of a classmate from primary school who went through chemotherapy, and of our principal shaving his hair in support.
I’m not doing this to compare experiences, or to speak for anyone else. I’m doing it as a small, personal act of solidarity, and as a way to support people who are facing something far bigger than I am.

By joining this movement of thousands who shave, colour, or donate their hair through Shave for a Cure, you’re helping to raise funds to support Kiwis impacted by blood cancer.

If you’re able to donate, you’ll be helping fund vital research and provide care and support for people living with blood cancer in New Zealand.

Every day, 8 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with a blood cancer, and the need for support is ongoing.

What your donation can help with:

•$28 can help provide information for families affected by blood cancer.

•$55 can help provide financial assistance so patients can get to hospital for treatment.

•$112 can help ensure access to support groups.

•$200 can help support research toward better treatments and cures.

•$500 can help connect young patients with their classmates through Monkey in My Chair.

Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference.

Thank you for reading, for supporting this cause, and for standing alongside those affected by blood cancer. Your support means a lot to me as I prepare to make this change—and far more to those who need these services every day. 💛
