Ten Years On, Shaving Again — and Why It Matters More This Time
Ten years ago, I took part in Shave for a Cure for the first time. Back then, it felt like a big thing to do. Ten years on, the reasons feel different, and in some ways, heavier.
Over the past year, our family — like many others — has been impacted by cancer. We’ve lost people we love, and we’ve seen firsthand how a diagnosis doesn’t exist in isolation. It reshapes daily life and places a quiet, ongoing strain on the people around it — partners, children, siblings — as they try to hold everything together while supporting someone they love. While this fundraiser specifically supports research and care for blood cancers, taking part feels like a way to pause, reflect, and quietly honour those experiences, and those we’ve lost.
This year also feels significant on a more personal level. Both of my children were very small the last time I did this — my daughter was a baby, and my son was just two — and now they’re old enough to notice and ask why. I want to keep reinforcing values we care about at home: that compassion matters, that showing up for others matters, and that how we look is far less important than what we do. Hair grows back, but the things we choose to stand for tend to last.
Shaving my head won’t change what’s already happened, but it feels like something practical I can do — to start conversations, raise awareness, and hopefully contribute in a small way, to support people affected by blood cancer.
If you’re able to support this by donating or sharing my page, I’d really appreciate it.
