Monday 21st Sep
The atmosphere in the school auditorium today was electric as two staff and several students shaved, cut, coloured and waxed for a cure for Blood Cancer NZ. Two more staff who couldn’t join us at the lunchtime event in the packed auditorium, did their shaves separately. There will be several more ‘skinheads’ at staff morning briefings for the near future. 
The Mana Horomaka prefects did a fantastic job of organising everything, right down to a slide show, live interviews, mood music and a camera crew to record the entire process. There was one volunteer shaver for each of the team losing their hair, and the most entertaining part was the stifled screams of the boys having their legs waxed! A gold coin donation at the door will swell the coffers so that the HHS contributions continue to grow. If you still want to donate, it’s never too late.

My heart is so full right now.
The amazing generosity and aroha of the sponsors to Hornby High’s shave-for-a-cure venture has been truly incredible. I am so humbled by and grateful to the 26 donors to my page which has exceeded $2000 now, bringing our overall total to over $3500 - more than a thousand dollars over our goal. This is quite some feat as our HHS page was only created just over ten days ago!  One donor wants to remain anonymous, but I wish to give them a public ‘shout out’ and a huge THANK YOU for donating $600. 
It’s 1.32am and by this afternoon I will have shaved my hair for this very worthy cause. It will take a long time to regrow, but it will be worth it. 
I can’t help but think of those currently undergoing treatment for some form of blood cancer. I know there is someone who is awake right now beside a sickbed - praying earnestly for the sun to rise as they await the hope a new dawn brings…

I’m really doing this!

It is thirty years since my son died of leukaemia so it’s very fitting for me to do this shave now to raise funds for Blood Cancer NZ, whose mission it is to research ways in which to help cure this disease. My school Hornby High School has raised over $2000 so I will shave on Monday - as will some of my colleagues and some senior students. We will be happy to receive any further donations to reach or exceed our fund-raising goal.
